Frequently asked questions about our box mounting:

Q: How does box mounting differ from picture framing?

Framed photos and posters are usually matted and placed behind glass. Box mounts do not use mats. The artwork is glued down onto 1/8" hardboard which does not warp. Box mounts create a three-dimensional effect because the photo/poster projects from the wall.

Q: What are the benefits to box mounting?

Box mounts eliminate two problems associated with framed artwork. There is no glare or fear of glass breakage. To reduce glare, we spray the finished box mount with a satin finish. The original photo will be slightly less shiny once sprayed.

Q: Can a photo or poster be trimmed?

Yes, we will trim a poster according to your instructions.

Q: How does our product compare to other box mounts offered on the internet?

Do not accept inferior quality box mounts advertised on the internet. These products use mica on the sides and come in a limited number of colors, usually black and white. On mica sided box mounts, the edge of the mounting material unattractively shows and is not the same shade as the rest of the box. Our box mounts don't use mica edges and the edge of our mounting board is painted so no unattractive edge appears. We offer an infinite variety of custom blended colors for the sides of our box mounts to your specifications at no extra cost.

Larger box mounts require cross-bracing to keep them from twisting or racking. Cross-bracing on plastic box mounts may create a ghost image impression on the front surface of your poster or photograph. Our cross-bracing is glued to 1/8" tempered hard board which prevents this unsightly effect.

Q: How far out from the wall does the box mount project (depth from wall)?

The standard depth is 1.5 inches. Most of our clients choose the 1.5 depth. Other depths are available from a one inch minimum to 2 inch maximum at no extra charge.

Q: How do you hang a box mount?

We install a wire inside the back of the box (the same type of wire used in picture framing) and the appropriate sized picture hook/nail is included.

Q: How do I clean a box mount?

Box mounts can only be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth or brush to remove dust. We cannot guarantee box mounts if solvents or water are sprayed/rubbed onto the artwork.

Q: Will it damage the picture to have it box-mounted?

No. However, you will not be able to slip the picture out the way you do with a framed photo. Your picture is permanently laminated to the box.

Q: How does the cost of box mounting compare to picture framing?

Box mounts cost 30% to 50% less than equally sized framed photos and posters.

Q: Is there anything I shouldn't box mount?

We cannot box mount tissue, mylar film, or cebachrome.

Q: Can you tell me about how much a box mount, say an 8"x 10", will weigh?

An 8" x 10" box mount weighs approximately 1.25 lbs. A 22" x 28" box mount weighs about 5.125 lbs.

Q: How long will a box mount last?

A box mount will last for years as long as no water/solvents are used to clean it.

Q: Will sun light damage box mounts?

As is the case with framed artwork, direct sun light will fade the photo or poster. We recommend that box mounts not be placed in direct sun light. We cannot guarantee that fading will not result if a box mount is placed in direct sun light.

Q: Can I hang a box mount in the bathroom or kitchen?

Yes. Chesapeake Box Mounts are covered with a protective finish that protects them from humidity.
